چکیده

If enough of their Lyman limit continuum escapes, star-forming galaxies could be significant contributors to the cosmic background of ionizing photons. To investigate this possibility, we obtained the first deep imaging in the far ultraviolet of eleven bright blue galaxies at intermediate redshift (1.1 < z < 1.4) with the STIS FUV MAMA detector on the Hubble Space Telescope. No Lyman continuum emission was detected. Sensitive, model-independent, upper limits of typically < 2×10 −19 ergs cm −2 sec −1Å −1 were obtained for the ionizing flux escaping from these normal galaxies. This corresponds to lower limits on the observed ratio of 1500 to 700Å flux of 150 up to 1000. Based on a wide range of stellar synthesis models, this suggests that less than 6%, down to less than 1%, of the available ionizing flux emitted by hot stars is escaping these galaxies. The magnitude of this spectral break at the Lyman limit confirms that the basic premise of " Lyman break " searches for galaxies at high redshift can also be applied at intermediate redshifts. This implies that the integrated contribution of galaxies to the UV cosmic background at z ∼ 1.2 is less than 15%, and may be less than 2%. Blueward of the Lyman limit lies a wavelength region of great observational uncertainty and astrophysical significance. These far-UV photons control ionization of the interstellar and intergalactic media today, and at all times since recombination (Madau et al. 1999).

Hst Imaging and Keck Spectroscopy of Z ≈ 6 I-band Drop-out Galaxies in the Acs Goods Fields

We measure the surface density of i-band dropout galaxies at z ∼ 6 through wide-field HST/ACS imaging and ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy. Using deep HST ACS SDSS-i (F775W) and SDSS-z (F850LP) imaging from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N; 200 arcmin), we identify 9 i-dropouts satisfying an (i − z)AB > 1.5 selection criterion to a depth of z AB = 25.6 (correspondin...

Long exposure, long-slit spectra have been obtained in the UV/optical bands for two galaxies at z = 2.96 and z = 3.32 to investigate the fraction of ionizing UV photons escaping from high redshifts galaxies. The two targets are among the brightest galaxies discovered by Steidel and collaborators and they have different properties in terms of Lyman-α emission and dust reddening. No significant L...

We review the properties of z > 5 galaxies studied with HST and with the Keck telescopes, and discuss the detectability of Lyα emission-line galaxies out to z ∼ 6.5 based on these data and ongoing narrowband imaging surveys. The brightest sources may show (R − Z) color breaks, although the high sky background at Z (λeff ≈ 9200 Å), makes such observations challenging for typical faint sources. K...

Hα Spectroscopy of Galaxies at Z > 2: Kinematics and Star Formation 1

We present near-infrared spectroscopy of Hα emission lines in a sample of 16 star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2.0 < z < 2.6. Our targets are drawn from a large sample of galaxies photometrically selected and spectroscopically confirmed to lie in this redshift range. We have obtained this large sample with an extension of the broadband UnGR color criteria used to identify Lyman break galaxies ...

The Hubble Deep Field in the Far Ultraviolet

Results from a recent HST survey of field galaxies at wavelengths 1600 Å and 2400 Å are be presented. The data are used to constrain the fraction of Lyman-continuum radiation that escapes from galaxies at redshifts z ≈ 1. The combined UV-IR photometry for HDF galaxies is also used to investigate whether low-mass starburst galaxies dominate the field-galaxy population at redshift z ≈ 1. The rela...
